American stoves and hearths
American stoves and hearths were introduced in the second half of the 19th century. In Bohemia, they were first shown in1892 at the World exhibition in Prague. Soon, they were imported to the whole Austria-Hungary but mainly to the region of Bohemia. This type of stoves and fireplaces became quickly popular. The changes in decorative details clearly show features typical for particular periods of their production.
These stoves are cast iron, non-extinguishing, top-fed stoves. Their typical feature is, appart from rich nickel-coating and mica windows on three sides of the stove, a sophisticated burn system and venting, which increases the efficiency of burning up to 80 %. American stoves and fireplaces produced in Bohemia till 1940 were considerably improved in construction and often reexported to overseas. Originally, they were meant for heating with coke or anthracite, however, nowadays we can use wood or wood briquettes.
